AWD vs 4WD - which one do I actually need for winter driving?
Just moved to a region with real winters (from a warm climate) and car shopping. Everyone says I need AWD or 4WD. What's the actual difference and which is better for snowy commutes? I'm not off-roading, just want to get to work safely.

For snowy commutes with no off-roading, AWD is what you want. It's automatic - the car decides when to send power to rear wheels. 4WD is for off-road or deep snow and usually needs manual engagement. More importantly: winter TIRES matter more than drive system. A FWD car with winter tires is safer than AWD with all-seasons in snow. Get winter tires regardless.
AWD helps you go, doesn't help you stop. That's tires. I see SUVs in ditches every winter because drivers think AWD makes them invincible. Get good winter tires (Nokian, Blizzak, X-Ice).
