What exactly does 'certified pre-owned' actually mean?
I see CPO cars everywhere but I'm not sure what the standard is. Is there a universal process, or does every manufacturer define it differently? What should I actually expect from a CPO vehicle?

Every manufacturer defines their own CPO program - no universal standard. But generally, a MANUFACTURER CPO car must be within certain age (usually 5-6 years) and low kilometres (under 100,000-130,000 km), pass a multi-point inspection (100-200+ points depending on brand), and come with extended warranty beyond original. Only the manufacturer can certify its own brand's cars. 'Dealer certified' is NOT the same thing - it's just a used car with the dealer's own inspection and maybe a third-party warranty.
Ask specifically: is this MANUFACTURER certified or DEALER certified? Manufacturer CPO means the automaker backs the warranty and the standards. Dealer certified means the dealer slapped a sticker on it. Big difference. Only manufacturer CPO is worth the premium.
