Is it rude to walk away from a deal after negotiating for an hour?
Spent a while negotiating and the dealer wouldn't come down to my target (about $800 apart). Felt really awkward walking out after they'd invested so much time. Was I being unreasonable?

Not rude at all. It's business. The dealer's time investment is part of their job - they know some deals won't close. If $800 matters to you (and it should - that's real money), walking was right. Often you'll get a call the next day accepting your offer. The most expensive mistake is buying the wrong car because you felt bad about the salesperson's time.
The awkward feeling is something dealers count on. It's psychological. Don't fall for it. You're spending thousands - you get to be picky. A polite 'I appreciate your time but this doesn't work for me today' is professional.
