Do I really need to follow the 'severe' maintenance schedule?
Manual has two schedules - normal and severe. Under severe, oil changes, transmission fluid, spark plugs are done much more often. I mostly do city driving with short trips under 8 km. Does that really qualify as 'severe'? Seems excessive.

Yes, your driving pattern is textbook severe service. Short trips mean engine never fully warms up - moisture and fuel residue don't burn off from oil, leading to sludge. City driving means more idling, stop-and-go, transmission shifts, brake use. Following severe schedule is NOT excessive - it's appropriate for how you actually drive. Normal schedule is for mostly highway at steady speeds.
Oil change interval is most important to follow on severe schedule. Other items (transmission, plugs) you can probably split the difference between normal and severe to save money. But oil changes are cheap insurance.
